Marriage Counselling
Jennifer McDermott, M.A., R.S.W. Counselling Services can help if you are experiencing relationship problems. Most couples experience periods of difficulty & conflict during their marriage. Many life stressors, such as debt, illness, work or infidelity can put significant strain on marital life & sometimes cause separation or divorce. Poor communication & healthy boundaries can also be problematic, preventing couples from discussing & solving contentious issues.
The aim of Jennifer McDermott's marriage counselling services is to help partners improve communication, resolve conflict, & build positive, mutually respectful relationships. As an experienced marriage therapist & registered social worker, Jennifer McDermott will work with couples to improve their interaction by developing listening, problem-solving & communicative skills. Jennifer always gives people the opportunity to voice their frustrations in an environment conducive to expression. To better the marriage relationship, Jennifer is open to meeting with people individually &/or as couples. Couples counselling, however, is not always sought as a means of repairing a relationship. Sometimes it is only used to help people maintain lasting relationships or as a means to correct any negative behaviour patterns that may be causing problems. |
Marriage Therapy
If you seek therapy related to your marriage a number of therapeutic techniques &approaches may be employed to build the necessary understanding & empathy in your relationship. Jennifer will create a safe & warm environment where effective communication, listening & problem solving skills will be explored. Of the various approaches to couples counselling, psychodynamic therapy is one of the most traditional. It relates unresolved conflicts from the past to marital problems experienced in the present & the needs of both people are seriously considered. Behavioural therapy is also another popular approach encouraging the modification of behaviour patterns that may have a negative effect on the marriage. Jennifer utilizes these approaches, as well as believes strongly in imago therapy & integrates these concepts into her practice. When there is a time -limited framework, brief therapy can also be used & is sometimes more effective at helping clients to work towards clearly defined goals. Lastly, group therapy is also helpful for those comfortable enough to participate, enabling people to share similar experiences.
