Mental Health

The risk of developing mental health problems can be greatly reduced by integrating the following  approaches into your life:

• Ensuring that you are have a healthy nutrition.

Since your brain consumes 20% of the energy of your daily food intake it is essential that you have a well balanced diet.   An unhealthy diet & irregular meals will directly impact the functioning of your brain.    Brain functions impacted include, but are not limited to lower learing abilities, lack of energy, memory impairment, impatience, as well as a higher sensitivity to environmental stressors.

• Ensuring that you have a physically active lifestyle.

A lifestyle that incorporates physical activity will help you improve your tolerance to stress.  Furthermore, it is common that you feel somewhat euphoric and energetic for up to 48 hours after an exercise session.  When you exercise, your mood will improve because your body releases chemicals into the blood stream that reach your brain.

• Ensuring that you get the proper amount & quality of sleep each day.

Disturbed, insufficient, &/or irregular sleep patterns have a direct impact on your mental health.   People who do not get enough sleep tend to over eat or have unhealthy eating habits  Sleep related factors can also affect your mood & energy levels.   On average, most adults need 8 hours of uninterruted sleep each day.

• Ensuring that you address any addictions or substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, gambling etc) issues occuring in your life.

Addictions or substance abuse issues have been linked to serveral mental health illnesses.   Attempting to address stress and other menth health issues  in a persons life while they are actively engaged in their substance abuse has been found to be largely ineffective.   In fact, they can have the opposite affect & increase stress.

Jennifer McDermott Counselling Services can assess and assist you with addressing any of these risk factors in your life.
