Parenting & Adolescence Counselling

Jennifer McDermott, M.A., R.S.W., Counselling Services provides support to both parents & their adolescence during difficult times in their lives.  During these life challenges, it is often difficult to know what is the best approach when addressing a concern with a child.  Is it just a phase or a serious problem?  Jennifer McDermott can help you as a parent, navigate through this & sort out your various options, as well as specifically help your adolescence cope with their life's ups & downs, signficant life changes (e.g., puberty, divorse, separation) &/or in some cases abuse or substance misuse.

Obviously, when it comes to responsibility there is nothing more important than parenting. Poor parenting can result in many unwanted behavioural problems that if left uncorrected can manifest themselves later in life causing all sorts of problems for that child.  Lets face it, being a parent is not easy & poor parenting can occur simply because we don't know any better or any different.   Regardless of the cause or the particular issue you are faced, Jennifer McDermott can provide guidance in this area.

Adolescent counselling is intended to help youth (usually between the ages of 10 and 19 years of age) make sense of their feelings & behaviour.  Adolescence is a challenging stage in which considerable physical & mental changes take place.  Because of puberty, teenagers may often feel over-sensitive & lack self-confidence as they come to terms with the changes they are experiencing.  Mood swings & shyness are some of the most common features associated with adolescence. It is a period of vulnerability for the teenager, which requires ongoing support &understanding.

Teenagers will also explore their independence by making friends & widening their social circle.  As they begin to carve out an identity, they become more susceptible to their friend's influences.  In general this is a healthy process that enables the teenager to find a niche outside of the family environment. But occasionally peer pressure may lead to situations that need parental or professional guidance.

Therapy

Sessions often involve both parents & their adolescences.  Within this context, approaches such as family therapy allow both parents & teenagers the chance to explore their unresolved issues & voice any feelings they may have in a supportive environment.   Individual sessions for both parent and youth may also be appropriate if it is identified that a person is dealing with a specific concern that is best addressed by individual therapy.

Jennifer McDermott Counselling Services can help you if you are struggling with a parenting issue or need a counsellor for your adolescence.
